    Description

HISTORIC, POIGNANT BOOK ON DEDICATION OF CONNECTICUT MEMORIAL AT ANDERSONVILLE. PUBLISHED IN 1908.
Last year I bought a group of books on various Civil War topics.  Unlike modern publications, many of the books in this collection were printed in the late 19th to early 20th century, when many Civil War veterans were still alive.
This book is part of that group.  It is entitled:
"In Memory of the Men of Connecticut Who Suffered in Southern Military Prisons 1861-1865".
It is 10" x 7 1/4", 73 pages.  The book is in at least Very Good condition.  Published in 1908 by the State of Connecticut.
The book is a first-hand account of a train journey of Connecticut Civil War veterans who were POWs in the infamous Andersonville prison camp.  They traveled back to Andersonville to be part of a memorial dedication to Connecticut soldiers who did not survive the war and POW imprisonment.  Their experience going to and then attending the dedication ceremony is the heart of this book.  Though the book was illuminating and captures well some of the thoughts of the veterans, it is still hard to imagine what it must have been like for these men, traveling decades later as middle age and older, to revisit a place where death and suffering surrounded them.  A place where the loss of comrades who did not survive the war, must have been brought back as a fresh pain.  Yet also a time of to be grateful, for those who did service.
Though it must be stated that Confederate POWs also suffered during the war, the severe overcrowding and scarce supplies confronting the southern states contributed to horrific living conditions where many Union POWs died; 13,000 Union prisoners died at Andersonville.
30 day return guarantee as long as the book is returned in the same condition as sent.  Mailing includes insurance and is based on domestic mailing; international mailing is based on destination and will be sent through Ebay's Global Shipping Program.
This will make a nice addition to a general collection of Civil War books, and in particular original, late 19th century books on Civil War POW camps.
