Experten
commanders of World War II. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, awarded by Nazi Germany for extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. He sank 35 ships including the U.S. Destroyer Reuben James. Here he is portrayed peering through a periscope, perhaps sighting on a soon-to-be victim or planning an escape from pursuing ships. Regardless, it’s an evocative image capturing the claustrophobic world of the submarine service.
